Updated Classroom Management Plan

The New and Improved Classroom Management Plan - for grades K - 5

Positive Reinforcement:

  • When the class is following expectations, I give the students a point under a smiley face. I do this all the way up to fifth grade. 
  • If the class earns more smiley points than frown points, they get 3 - 5 minutes of an educational video related to the content at hand or a 3-5 minute game reviewing the day's lesson. 
  • I ensure the class earns the reward at a minimum of 90% of the time. 
  • If I want to emphasis a child doing something exceptionally well, I give them a "Golden ticket" they can take home. I write their  name of the board and then hand them out at the end of class. 
  • The internal satisfaction of a job well done. 

Negative Reinforcement for individual student
  • Time one: If a student is not following directions, I state which rule they broke and put a point on the frown face side. I sometimes skip this step. 
  • Time two: formal warning with an initial written on the board. 
  • Time three and each additional time during the day: time out with think sheet. 
  • Failure to follow expectations of time out: Time out in a colleague's classroom.
  • Disruption in the colleagues classroom: Sent to the office 

Negative Reinforcement for class

    • I give the whole class a frown point.

    Classroom Management with Google Meet  This is a potential plan that you could use. Feel free to have a different plan in place. The most important thing is that you have a plan, that you follow it consistently with all students.  You may have a student who needs something different due to an IEP or other behavioral challenge. In that case, create a plan specific for that student and ensure that you teach it to the student as well. (You need to teach it at least twice as many times as you teach the regular plan. Otherwise, you are setting yourself up for frustration.)     Obsessing about your worries is like scribbling on your writing to make the page clear again

    What about thought? Have you ever tried to erase a thought or scribble over a thought?    As a teacher, I get to see this frequently. A student will write something that they decide they don’t like. Sometimes the student will try and erase what they wrote. Other times they will scribble over their old thought.  If the child tries to erase what they wrote, they often create a much bigger mess on the paper than they had before. All of the aggressive erasing ends up creating a big smudge, potentially ripping the paper and wasting an enormous amount of time.  Erasing a thought would be like trying to not think something you already thought. You might laugh reading that sentence. How can you not think something that you already thought? But, I’m sure you have said, I need to stop thinking about this at some time in your life.
