After school eating habits
I frequently power eat after school. And during the summer, I power eat at any given time of ythe day. Especially if I see food. Which happens a lot because I'm at home with my three wonderful children and my wife.
I realized, I have a lot of thoughts and reasons that power my eating.
I realized, I have a lot of thoughts and reasons that power my eating.
- I don't eat enough during the day. So my body is worried I might actually might be starving.
- And this is a big habit. All through middle school and beyond I routinely didn't eat a lot at lunch because of my social anxiety. Plus, I tended not to pack a big lunch. That just seemed like too much work at 6 am when I was getting up.
- Also, starting middle school I would arrive at the bus stop starving. There was a cafe and it was my habit to have one huge Costco chocolate muffin warmed up after school. Every day!
Ok, so my body is concerned I might really be starving. The deep inner layer doesn't understand language. It probably doesn't know that I have plenty of food. It was experiencing a lack of food. There must be a famine.
In that case I should do the following:
- Not move too much or work out.
- Conserve calories and take a nap or sleep a lot
- Eat as much sugar and fat as possible
- Eat in secret Your survival is at stake. This is not the time to share.
- Eat as fast as possible. Otherwise someone is going to get your food.
- Eat without tasting the food. If you taste, you might notice it doesn't actually taste good after you are full.
- Focus on the feeling of deprivation because that will encourage you to keep getting in those precious calories. That feeling really motivates you to eat even when you are not hungry. And that is the key to surviving a famine when food is suddenly an option for now.
What to do with the knowledge. I have some ideas, but these ideas are new to me. The book I read before having this idea was called Brain Over Binge. I think these ideas are how the book applies to me combined with other thoughts I've had in the well over 20 years I've struggled with healthy eating, sleepiness and a lack of desire to work out.
